With a legacy spanning over 46 years, the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology and National Institute of Heart Diseases (AFIC & NIHD) stands as one of the nation’s premier healthcare facilities. Situated in the heart of Rawalpindi, adjacent to the federal capital, Islamabad, this cutting-edge tertiary care cardiac center boasts 400 beds. AFIC & NIHD takes pride in its service to a diverse populace, including the upper Punjab, federal capital, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and referrals from Armed Forces Hospitals nationwide.
Benefiting from a cadre of extensively trained specialists and dynamic residency training initiatives in cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, and cardiac anesthesia, AFIC&NIHD has ascended to the pinnacle of healthcare excellence within the nation.
Through a strategic partnership with the International Children Heart Foundation (ICHF) USA, the hospital has made remarkable strides in advancing its capabilities in surgical procedures and intensive care for complex congenital heart conditions in pediatric patients.
By virtue of its educational endeavors, AFIC & NIHD contributes to the training of not just physicians, but also nurses and a diverse array of healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. This also includes hosting international conferences on cardiology, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology, and pediatric cardiology. Through ongoing medical education (CME) and continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives, the institution ensures the perpetuation of high-quality care for both current and future generations.
Presently, in partnership with AFIC, the federal government is actively engaged in constructing NEPCARD (National institute of Heart Diseases Center of Excellence for Preventive cardiovascular research and development). This facility will function as the national hub for collaborative research, data analysis, and the eventual formulation of guidelines. These guidelines will shape public policies aimed at benefitting the masses.

About Us
In Army Cardiac services were started in the cardiothoracic Centre, MH Rawalpindi in 1953. The first angiography was performed in 1969 and first open heart surgery was done in 1970. This center was upgraded to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in 1978. Just 3 years after, to extend the services to fellow citizens, government servants and poor patients this institute was upgraded to National Institute of Heart Diseases (NIHD) under President Directive No. 216 of 1981.
This 250-bedded hospital is a major tertiary cardiac care center in Pakistan, dedicated to cardiac patients from over the country including Armed Forces, Federal Government employees, and civil population. AFIC/NIHD is an extremely busy center equipped with 19 bedded Coronary Care units, 19 bedded surgical ITC, and Departments of Cardiac Electrophysiology, Echocardiography, Exercise Tolerance Test, and Nuclear Cardiology.
